Advocacy Matters is the new monthly editorial column written by IASJ staff members about current events, human rights, environmental issues, and corporate controversies.
IASJ believes that in the pursuit of social justice, advocacy really does matter: advocates champion the cause of human rights and equitable economies for all. Over the coming months, IASJ staff will share the research and frontline news that informs our advocacy efforts and our vision for corporate accountability.
The inaugural post is by Jillianne Lyon, IASJ Program Director, as part of IASJ's 'Climate + Dignity' campaign. She focuses on the issue of highly toxic, fluorinated chemicals known as Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances, or PFAS for short.
In her article 'Forever chemicals: A legacy of environmental racism', Lyon reveals how hundreds of household items, from cookware to contact lenses, are made using these substances. They are often called 'forever chemicals', because they build up in both our bodies and the environment, and can take over over a thousand years – an entire millennium – to break down. Worse, these effects are felt more acutely by low-income communities and communities of colour.
