In 2023, we were pleased to see that the Church had used its voice to challenge climate injustice, used its money to invest in climate solutions and used its power to stop funding fossil fuels. As we begin 2024, we celebrate the inspiring work of campaigners who care for creation and who mobilise the Church and wider society to do likewise.
While there were many other successes, these are the Top Ten as chosen by the team at Operation Noah:
The Church of England announced their intention to divestment from fossil fuels.
The #DivestThisLent campaign resulted in nine Catholic and Church of England diocese taking action on divestment from fossil fuels.
A church investment conference 'Financing a Liveable Future' was held at the Friends House in London.
The 'Big One' protest and 'No Faith in Fossil Fuels' service in April.
Operation Noah attended two summer events: the Greenbelt and New Wine Summer Festivals.
The Global Divestment Announcement in April, with 31 faith insitutions from six countries.
An online Supporters' Event in October.
Two hundred and twenty-six serving and former Church of England clergy – including 10 bishops – wrote to the UK Pensions Board and Church Commissioners calling for fossil-free pensions.
By the end of 2023, only two Church of England dioceses were still invested in fossil fuels.
'Stop Rosebank' – Four hundred and twenty-seven Christian leaders signed an open letter to the UK Prime Minister protesting about the decision to give the go-ahead to the Rosebank oil field in the North Sea.
